Are Sleep Disorders Dangerous?
It is estimated that 30 - 40 million Americans suffer from a serious sleep disorder. The danger lies in the effects that a sleep disorder may cause. An untreated sleep disorder may significantly increase a person’s risk for obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, and injury from accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that yearly, 100,000 police reported automobile crashes are the result of sleepy drivers. In addition, an undiagnosed sleep disorder may affect the following: - short term memory
- the ability to process information and make appropriate decisions
- impair reaction time, judgment, and vision
- decrease performance, creativity, and motivation
- increase moodiness, anger, and depression
Don’t gamble with your life or the lives of others. If you have signs or symptoms of a sleep disorder, seek help. Your dreams and the dreams of others will thank you.
