How Are Sleep Disorders Treated
Treating a sleep disorder can be accomplished in many ways. A sleep specialist may elect to use medication, behavioral modification, durable medical equipment, surgery, or a combination of the four. Depending on which sleep disorder you have been diagnosed, you may be prescribed continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which provides a positive pressure through a mask that helps keep the airways open. Medications may be used. Perhaps your situation can be improved with some sleep “retraining” using behavioral modification techniques. Some sleep disorders can be effectively treated using one method, however; more than one can be combined to meet your situation. Whichever treatment is decided on, it is important that you follow the instructions and keep your sleep specialist informed if any changes are encountered. The benefits you receive from your treatment plan depend on your willingness to comply with it.
