How Sleep Conditions Can Impact Diabetes

Monday, March 17, 2014

Many people are unable to sleep because they experience insomnia, snoring or waking up throughout the night. Problems sleeping can negatively impact health and various diseases, including diabetes. Recent studies have shown that up to 70 percent of people with diabetes have a sleep condition involving one or more of these side effects, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

OSA is a sleep disorder in which breathing stops and starts repeatedly during sleep. As OSA worsens, diabetic control deteriorates. However, treating OSA has multiple benefits. Not only can it help you manage diabetes, but you’ll find yourself sleeping better and feeling refreshed every morning.

Do you know someone with diabetes or are you suffering from similar sleep problems? Register here for our free Diabetes and Sleep webinar on Monday, March 24 – the day before the American Diabetes Association’s Alert Day®. Iowa Sleep founder Dr. Steven Zorn will conduct the webinar, which will take place from noon to 12:30 p.m.

The webinar will explore:

  • The strong connection between diabetes and OSA
  • How OSA aggravates diabetes
  • How the two conditions parallel each other in terms of severity
  • How to recognize symptoms of OSA
  • The importance of screening diabetic patients for OSA and providing treatment for it
  • Studies demonstrating how OSA treatment improves diabetes control

You’ll learn even more about the connection between diabetes and sleep and when it’s time to seek help. We believe this webinar will also lead to a better understanding of OSA and better control of your diabetes.
